5 points misunderstood about Background Checks

The smoking gun – undeniable evidence of a crime done.  I can’t find a better metaphor for a critical pre-employment service we provide to our clients every day!  You can look at this two different ways:  You find out that a administrative assistant has been skimming off the top for a long time and you catch them red-handed quite some time after the damage is done, or you find out before you hired them that they have a criminal history and here you are weighing the need for someone that wants a second chance.  The point is, they’re both smoking guns.

The questions for you are simple.  Do you need background checks?  Do they always tell the story?  We’ve heard it all, and we want you to know a little bit about the most common questions we hear.  Enjoy this little “FAQ” sheet we’ve put together!  We’re not going to go out on a limb and say background checks are always your “smoking gun,” but it is quite effective in helping you make an informed decision about a new hire you’re considering.  So, without much more ado, he’s the five arguments we are always equipped to explain:

1. Only big organizations need to do background checks.

Not true at all. Anyone who is hiring, even small organizations or individuals, would benefit greatly from the use of background checks.  A background check is designed to help any employer make a safe and skilled hire.

2.  You can get all the information you need from a background check online.

The reality is that online research is not enough.  Most online searches are done using databases that can be out of date or incomplete.  Subjects with similar names, missing or inaccurate identifying information (date of birth, previous or maiden names, etc) are all things that can make online background check results inadequate.

Background Check performs a Social Security Trace on every individual to establish positive identification and can uncover hidden information.  All information is confirmed and verified by in-house researchers.

3.  Your company needs only a drivers license number or SSN to find all criminal activity associated with an individual.

No single source exists that provides complete and up-to-date information about a person’s criminal history.  Public records are filed by first name, last name and date of birth at the courthouses.

4.  All criminal records can be found using the National Criminal Database.

Some records are not yet filed in the National Criminal Database.  Our application performs searches at the county level to reveal up-to-date criminal history.

5.  Background Checks are too expensive for your company in this economy.
