We all would love the opportunity to peer into the future and get a “sneak peek” of the things that are important to us. Whether that be business or personal, without this, we base our present day decisions on analysis, study and conversation with others. But what about the future of work? How will we conduct our daily jobs? What will the workplace look like? What will our employers be like? How will technology change or enable the workplace environment?
Based on a report prepared by Pricewaterhouse Coopers(PwC) called The Future of Work: A Journey to 2022, with feedback from HR experts worldwide, it looks like the future workplace environment will include more monitoring and privacy invasion by employers into employees personal lives outside the office. The practice of employers encouraging employees for healthy life styles to cut back on healthcare costs, will be much more prevalent.
The report also predicts a more pay-for-performance culture linking pay to performance in models built on data mining of many factors. Such privacy invasion from the constant monitoring and pay-for-performance could result in many individuals leaving the full time employee roles in favor of working as independent consultants. Employers will also pick and choose the right independent consultant specific to the role based on ratings from the prior clients the consultants had worked for.
There’s an old quote that says: “The only thing certain, is change.” So make no mistake, the future of work will be very different than it is today. So you have to ask yourself; are you prepared? Are you excited? Are you scared? And, what can I do to enable and make it work for me?
