On Wednesday, November 15th, Dominion Payroll employees volunteered to guide students from Glen Allen High School through Junior Achievement’s financial literacy program known as Finance Park. The five-hour field trip augments Junior Achievement’s year-long, in-class curriculum allowing students to get valuable hands on experience forming a household budget. Dominion Payroll’s expertise and insight into managing a paycheck and planning for the future was very valuable in adding to the day’s success.
“I was so happy to contribute my perspective from an industry background to Junior Achievement’s Finance Park,” said Cameron Redfearn, an accounting specialist with Dominion Payroll. “It was nice to guide students through the often-times abstract concepts of income and debt to the concrete examples of financing a new car or budgeting for date night in this program.”
Dominion Payroll is excited to partner with Junior Achievement participating in only the fourth such program held at their brand-new Finance Park facility atop the Libbie Mill library. The 20,000-square-foot third floor of the library houses the non-profit’s program for area middle and high school students. At the Finance Park, high school students assume an adult persona and work through scenarios to create a family budget that includes creating savings, managing debt, and paying for housing, transportation, health care, and more. The latest technology, including tablets for each student and interactive touch-screens throughout the facility, creates an exciting environment and contributes positively to the students’ engagement.
Kevin Wilson, Director of Community Engagement at Dominion Payroll, attended the October 5th Finance Park ribbon cutting stating, “It’s so wonderful to see all of the area municipalities and key community stakeholders come together around JA’s mission to promote entrepreneurship and work readiness through innovative financial literacy programming. Dominion Payroll couldn’t be more proud to support this important initiative.”
