Having true disconnection from work every now and again is extremely important. It can help us to reconnect with the things that matter most and see life through a “big picture” lens. I know for me, summer has always been a season of renewal, both physically and mentally.
But the leaves are already starting to show a little yellow…and those annual goal due dates are not so far off now! It’s time to get back into a focused mode. However, it can be quite challenging to get the motor humming! Inertia is a very real and dangerous force, and it affects all of us. We have to be very intentional if we are to remain on a path of improvement.
So, how to make the most of this season both personally and professionally? Here are a few ideas I hope will help:
The way you begin your day has a tremendous impact on how the rest of the day will go. Challenge yourself to a “morning three” routine to get some very positive energy flowing.
I find that when I am faithful to this routine, it changes the course of my whole day. I’m bubbling over with great ideas and just generally have better interactions with others.
Intrinsic motivation is a much higher quality of motivation than fear, finances, or inertia. It is so much easier to work with enthusiasm when there are regular reminders of the positive impact you are making through the unique mission of your organization. Ensure that you and your team have visibility into positive Voice of Customer data and celebrate the success of your customers daily. Find ways to ensure that peers have opportunities to lift one another up and highlight team members who are working with a “purpose-driven” energy.
TinyPulse data shows clearly that the number one reason people love their jobs is having great peers.
Hopefully, these ideas have helped to spark something you are excited to try. With all the changes happening in the world, it can be so easy to become overwhelmed. For many, this will lead to a subconscious victim mentality or flipping into a “wait and see” mode. We can’t let that happen. These are not days to sit on the sidelines…it’s a time to elevate the game and try new things. So “happy fall, y’all” and cheers to customer-centric innovation!
