Lending a Hand and a Hot Meal: A Day with The Doorways

At Dominion Payroll, giving back isn’t just something we do, it’s a part of who we are. Whether we’re helping a client navigate complex payroll challenges or rolling up our sleeves in the community, service is always at the center.

Earlier this week, our team had the opportunity to volunteer with The Doorways, a Richmond-based nonprofit that offers lodging and support for individuals and families traveling to the area for medical care. They provide more than just a place to stay, they offer comfort, compassion, and a sense of home during life’s most stressful moments. 

Our visit was originally scheduled as a “Windex Party” to help clean windows and spruce up outdoor spaces, but when the rain had other plans, The Doorways team quickly shifted gears, offering new, meaningful ways for us to contribute.

We divided into two teams: one group took to the kitchen, preparing a warm spaghetti and meatball meal with green beans, ready for guests returning from long days at the hospital. The other group sorted and packed donated toiletries into welcome kits that are given to guests upon arrival. For people far from home in the middle of a medical crisis, these small gestures, a hot meal, a toothbrush, a kind face, can make a world of difference.

Together, we were able to offer comfort, nourishment, and a bit of ease to people navigating incredibly hard moments. Kaitlin Powell, Marketing Brand Manager, had this to say, “The Doorways does so much to care for people in moments when it matters most. It felt good to play even a small part in that mission.”

At Dominion Payroll, we believe in showing up for our clients, for each other, and for our community. Volunteering with The Doorways gave us space to do just that. It was a moment to step out of our daily routines and into something more meaningful, together as a team. 

We’re grateful to The Doorways team for welcoming us in and reminding us how impactful small acts of kindness can be.
